GNC Systems Engineer
Location: Astroscale UK, Harwell, UK
Astroscale UK is looking for an experienced and skilled GNC Systems Engineer to join our Systems Engineering team, which is responsible for overseeing all aspects of system engineering across our missions. In this role, you will play a key part in the design, verification, and integration of Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) subsystems, including cutting-edge Computer Vision systems, for Astroscale’s missions.
As a GNC Systems Engineer, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your technical expertise, collaborative spirit, and problem-solving abilities in a dynamic, mission-driven environment. Astroscale’s GNC systems are integral to the success of our Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO) missions, incorporating both standard and bespoke GNC and Computer Vision algorithms and hardware. You will be involved in shaping innovative solutions, some of which represent core intellectual property for Astroscale.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the development of GNC systems for Astroscale projects, including requirements, FDIR, and V&V strategies, with a focus on integrating GNC algorithms, Computer Vision algorithms, and hardware for RPO missions.
- Support the logical integration of technical GNC subsystem work packages, ensuring alignment with overall system solutions, including subsystem development and verification plans.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams in the planning, design, and development of systems to ensure GNC subsystem performance and compatibility.
- Participate in GNC verification planning and execute associated test activities.
- Contribute to mission and subsystem review gates and technical documentation.
- Assist with GNC algorithm development for RPO missions and support the creation of GNC software architecture.
- Engage with customers and suppliers to define GNC system constraints and requirements, presenting technical solutions where necessary.
- Provide technical and programmatic leadership support to mission teams.
- Offer support and analysis for on-orbit operations of Astroscale spacecraft.
Essential Skills:
- Master’s degree in aerospace engineering or a related field.
- 3+ years of relevant experience in a GNC-related role.
- Hands-on experience with:
- Development of GNC systems.
- GNC requirement derivation and verification.
- Design and implementation of control laws and navigation algorithms.
- Theoretical understanding of guidance strategies for RPO missions.
- Familiarity with state-of-the-art GNC technologies and hardware used in space missions (including data processing, procurement, and trade-offs).
- Ability to collaborate effectively with other engineering teams to ensure integrated solutions.

Desirable Skills:
- Experience translating algorithms into operational flight software.
- Experience with GNC hardware integration and testing.
- Knowledge of RPO and docking algorithms/solutions.
- On-orbit operational experience of satellite missions.
- Advanced skills in Matlab/Simulink development.
- Intermediate skills in C/C++ software development and embedded systems.
- Familiarity with active debris removal missions such as RemoveDebris, e.DeOrbit, ATV, ELSA-d, and CleanSpace.
