Job Description

The Role

We are looking to appoint a Director of QUEST and Lecturer in Archaeology (Teaching & Research) to join the Department of Archaeology. This is a permanent, full-time position offering a unique opportunity to combine academic teaching and research with management of QUEST, the University’s archaeological and environmental science consultancy.

As Director, you will lead QUEST’s projects, manage staff, and oversee delivery of high-quality outputs. Alongside this, you will contribute to teaching and research within the Department of Archaeology and support the School’s academic mission.

Responsibilities

Lead and manage QUEST, including project delivery, staff management, and client engagement.

Oversee archaeological projects across multiple periods, from excavation through to post-excavation and publication.

Contribute to undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching in archaeology.

Undertake and publish research in archaeology or related fields.

Provide academic and pastoral support to students.

Contribute to the Department’s reputation as a centre of excellence in archaeology and heritage.

About You

You will bring:

Extensive knowledge and practical experience in the commercial archaeological sector, including project management and multi-period approaches.

A proven record of supervising teams and delivering projects to publication.

A broad understanding of British archaeology and the wider UK heritage sector.

Experience in teaching and organizing undergraduate or postgraduate programmes.

A PhD (or equivalent professional experience) in Archaeology, Geography, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.

Strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills.

It is expected that you will hold, or be willing to work towards, Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

The role reports to the Head of School, and you will also be supported by a mentor during your initial period of appointment.
