Job Description

About the Opportunity

This role brings together academia and industry in a practical, impact-driven project. The University of Sussex, in collaboration with Custom Pharmaceuticals Ltd, is offering a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) focused on advancing data-driven decision-making in pharmaceutical development.

You will be based primarily within the company, working closely with both academic experts and industry professionals. The goal is to design and implement modern data analytics and predictive modelling tools that improve how pharmaceutical products are developed—making processes faster, more reliable, and less dependent on trial-and-error methods.

This project aligns with broader UK priorities around innovation, life sciences, and data-led growth

What You’ll Be Doing

You will take ownership of a strategically important project, acting as the bridge between research and real-world application. Your work will include:

  • Analysing large datasets from formulation and manufacturing processes
Developing predictive models to support product development decisions
Applying optimisation techniques to improve efficiency and outcomes
Embedding data-driven tools into everyday workflows within the company
Contributing to the launch of a new analytics capability for clients

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and report progress to both academic and company stakeholders, ensuring the project delivers measurable impact.

About You

This role suits someone who enjoys solving complex problems using data and wants to see their work applied in a real industrial setting.

You should have:

  • A strong background in mathematics, statistics, data science, or a related field
A postgraduate qualification (PhD desirable, or Master’s with relevant experience)
Experience in statistical modelling, optimisation, and handling complex datasets
Programming skills in Python and/or R
The ability to explain technical insights clearly to non-technical audiences

Equally important are your organisational skills, independence, and ability to manage priorities in a collaborative environment.

About the KTP Programme

A Knowledge Transfer Partnership is a UK-wide programme designed to connect businesses with academic expertise. As a KTP Associate, you will lead a high-impact project while benefiting from structured professional development, mentoring, and training.

The programme supports innovation and economic growth across sectors

Working Environment

The University provides a research-led and collaborative environment, while the company offers direct exposure to real-world pharmaceutical challenges. This dual setting allows you to build both academic credibility and industry experience.
