Job Description

About the Role

The University of Sussex is seeking an experienced Data Architect to help shape and deliver a data-driven future aligned with the University’s strategic ambitions for the next decade.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in enhancing how data is structured, managed, and leveraged across the institution, unlocking its full potential to support research, teaching, and operations.

As a Data Architect, you will work across multiple projects and initiatives to design and implement effective data models, frameworks, and governance standards. You will lead efforts in data migration, integration, and analytics, supporting the University’s growing use of AI and advanced data technologies.

The role involves close collaboration with business stakeholders, Business Analysts, and IT Services colleagues across the University, contributing to the development of a cohesive, data-enabled ecosystem aligned with the Sussex 2035 strategy.

Please note: This is a re-advertisement of the role — previous applicants need not reapply. This is not a Data Engineering position.

About You

You will bring proven experience as a Data Architect or in a closely related role, with a deep understanding of data systems, design, and strategy.

You should possess:

Strong technical knowledge of data architecture, data modelling, and data governance approaches.

Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels.

Experience with data processing, reporting, and analytics tools.

Familiarity with Entity Relationship Modelling, DAMA-DMBOK, Archimate, BPMN, DMN, TOGAF, or other relevant architecture and process standards.

Proficiency in using modelling tools and translating complex data concepts into practical, business-oriented solutions.

You will be proactive, collaborative, and capable of building a network of data professionals across the University to promote best practices in data management and utilisation.

About the Division

The role sits within the University’s IT Services and Sussex Projects Division, led by the Chief Digital Technology Officer and senior leadership team.

The University is undergoing a major digital transformation, supported by long-term financial and strategic investment. This ambitious programme will redefine the University’s digital landscape, driving improvements in performance, capability, and innovation.

Key initiatives include:

A large-scale network renewal project introducing cutting-edge digital infrastructure.

Major construction and estate development, expanding campus accommodation and research spaces.

The creation of a fully data-enabled organisation that supports advanced analytics, automation, and decision-making.

Further information can be found on the IT Services & Sussex Projects webpage.
