Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic, forward-thinking Consultant Stroke Physician to join our high-performing stroke team. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of stroke services in the county, including the opening of a new 12-bed Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Musgrove Park Hospital in April 2026.
You will join a dedicated team of 8 consultant stroke physicians and 4 specialist doctors, working collaboratively to provide safe, patient-centred care across acute, hyperacute, and rehabilitation stroke pathways.

Key Responsibilities
As a Consultant Stroke Physician, your role will include:
- Leading daily ward rounds in the hyperacute stroke unit.
- Providing 24/7 thrombolysis coverage and collaborating with the AGWS telemedicine network.
- Running rapid access TIA clinics, seven days a week at Musgrove Park Hospital.
- Managing patients across acute stroke units at Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital.
- Contributing to stroke rehabilitation and early supported discharge services.
- Supporting and leading stroke research, with opportunities to participate in a wide range of trials.
- Supervising and teaching junior doctors and medical students.
- Participating in the 1 in 8 weekend HASU on-call rota.
- You will primarily be based at Musgrove Park Hospital, with occasional travel to Yeovil.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- MRCP or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise in the UK.
GMC Registration - Entry on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT).
- Strong experience in acute stroke, thrombolysis, TIA management, and stroke rehabilitation.
- Excellent communication and teamworking skills.
Desirable Qualifications
- Higher research degree (e.g., PhD, MD).
- Experience in teaching, leadership, audit, or management.
- Involvement in stroke research or quality improvement initiatives.
