Shape the Future of Stroke Care in Somerset
This is a genuinely exciting opportunity to join Somerset NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant Stroke Physician at a pivotal moment of service transformation. In April 2026, we will open a new 12-bed Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Musgrove Park Hospital, strengthening rapid access to specialist stroke care for people across the county.
You will become part of a highly collaborative and well-established team of 8 consultant stroke physicians and 4 specialty doctors, delivering hyperacute, acute, and rehabilitation stroke care across multiple sites. About Our Stroke Services
Somerset provides a county-wide, integrated stroke pathway, combining hyperacute intervention, inpatient care, rehabilitation, early supported discharge, and community follow-up. The new HASU will sit at the centre of this pathway, supported by upgraded imaging facilities, specialist stroke nursing, and close collaboration with the AGWS telemedicine thrombolysis network.
Stroke services are delivered primarily from Musgrove Park Hospital, with additional acute stroke care at Yeovil District Hospital, ensuring equitable access to high-quality care across Somerset.
The Role
As a Consultant Stroke Physician, you will play a central leadership role across the stroke pathway, delivering expert clinical care while contributing to service development, education, and research.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading daily ward rounds on the Hyperacute Stroke Unit
- Supporting a 24/7 thrombolysis service, including telemedicine working
- Delivering 7-day rapid access TIA clinics at Musgrove Park Hospital
- Managing patients on acute stroke units at Musgrove and Yeovil
- Contributing to stroke rehabilitation and early supported discharge services
- Participating in a 1 in 8 weekend HASU on-call rota
- Supervising and teaching junior doctors and medical students
- Supporting and leading stroke research, with access to a broad portfolio of national trials
- Your primary base will be Musgrove Park Hospital, with occasional cross-site working at Yeovil.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise
- Entry on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT)
- Significant experience in acute stroke care, thrombolysis, TIA management, and stroke rehabilitation
- Excellent communication, leadership, and teamworking skills
Desirable Criteria
- Higher research degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent)
- Evidence of teaching, leadership, audit, or management experience
- Active involvement in stroke research or quality improvement projects
