Shape the Future of Stroke Care in Somerset
This is a rare opportunity to play a leading role in the transformation of stroke services across Somerset. Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is expanding its stroke pathway and will open a new 12-bed Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Musgrove Park Hospital in April 2026.
We are seeking a Consultant Stroke Physician who is clinically driven, collaborative, and motivated by service improvement. Whether you are newly appointed to the consultant grade or looking for a fresh professional challenge, you will be joining a Trust that values innovation, teamwork, and patient-centred care.
You will become part of a well-established and supportive stroke team comprising 8 consultant stroke physicians and 4 specialist doctors, delivering high-quality care across hyperacute, acute, and rehabilitation services.
Your Role and Clinical Contribution
As a Consultant Stroke Physician, you will have a pivotal role in both frontline care and service development. Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading daily ward rounds within the Hyperacute Stroke Unit
- Delivering 24/7 thrombolysis support in collaboration with the AGWS telemedicine network
- Running 7-day rapid access TIA clinics at Musgrove Park Hospital
- Providing consultant-led care across acute stroke units at Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital
- Supporting stroke rehabilitation pathways and early supported discharge services
- Participating in a 1 in 8 HASU weekend on-call rota
- Supervising junior doctors and contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
- Actively supporting stroke research, with access to a strong portfolio of national and local trials
- Your primary base will be Musgrove Park Hospital, with occasional cross-site working at Yeovil.

- 8.5 Direct Clinical Care
- 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)
- Additional SPA time may be agreed for leadership, research, education, or service development
- A personalised job plan will be developed with the successful candidate

Essential Qualifications & Experience
You will need to demonstrate:
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Inclusion on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT)
- Strong clinical experience in acute stroke, thrombolysis, TIA management, and stroke rehabilitation
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Desirable Attributes
- Higher research degree or formal research training
- Evidence of leadership, teaching, audit, or service development
- Active involvement in stroke research or quality improvement initiatives
