Job Description
The Opportunity
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Community Psychiatry to join the Bridgwater Community Mental Health Service, based at Glanville House in the heart of Bridgwater.
This permanent post has been created through a combination of service expansion and consultant relocation, offering a genuine opportunity to shape and strengthen community psychiatry provision within a supportive, well-established team.
While this is a full-time (10 PA) role, flexibility around working hours and job planning is actively supported, and applications from candidates unable to work full-time will be considered. Some remote working can also be accommodated.
Applications are welcomed from substantive consultants, as well as Specialty Doctors / Specialist Grade psychiatrists who are working towards specialist registration.
About the Service
You will provide senior psychiatric leadership to the Bridgwater Adult Community Mental Health Team (CMHT), supporting patients registered with three GP practices across the Bridgwater and Burnham area.
The post is primarily community-focused, with no routine inpatient responsibilities. Inpatient care for the locality is managed by dedicated inpatient consultants, with close collaborative working to ensure smooth admission and discharge processes. Much of the interface work is now coordinated through the Home Treatment Team (HTT) and Urgent Care Hub, reducing the need for ward attendance.
CPA and Section 117 reviews are infrequent and can usually be attended remotely.
Your Role
As Consultant Psychiatrist, you will provide expert clinical care, leadership, and governance within a multidisciplinary setting.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients through outpatient clinics and home visits
- Acting as Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients on Community Treatment Orders and, by agreement, those on extended Section 17 leave
- Undertaking Mental Health Act assessments as a Section 12-approved doctor, including work within police custody when required
- Preparing reports and attending Mental Health Tribunal hearings
- Providing clinical leadership, advice, and case discussion to CMHT colleagues
- Working closely with inpatient consultants to ensure continuity of care
- Contributing to service development in line with national standards and best practice
- Participating in audit, appraisal, job planning, and peer supervision
- Supporting postgraduate education and, where possible, attending teaching programmes
- You will also contribute to leadership forums and senior medical staff meetings, helping to shape service delivery across the Trust.
On-Call Commitment
The post participates in a senior out-of-hours on-call rota (1 in 10). This provides consultant-level medical cover across adult, older adult, CAMHS, PICU, rehabilitation, and learning disability inpatient services.
The rota includes Mental Health Act assessments across wards, hospital places of safety, custody suites, and community settings.
This attracts:
- 1.25 PA for Section 12 duties
- 3% salary enhancement for RC responsibilities
- Additional Section fees (excluding Trust inpatients)
- Flexible participation levels can be discussed with the Clinical Director.

You are a skilled and compassionate psychiatrist with a strong commitment to high-quality community mental health care.
