Job Description
Join a Purpose-Built Inpatient Service Making a Real Difference
Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) is seeking an experienced and compassionate Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) inpatient team at Westerdale North Ward.
This is a replacement post, offering stability, focus, and the opportunity to work exclusively within a single, well-resourced inpatient setting — with no routine requirement to cover community or other inpatient services.
About Westerdale North Ward
Westerdale North is a 20-bed, mixed-sex inpatient ward for older adults experiencing functional mental health disorders. The ward relocated in March 2023 to modern, purpose-built facilities at Roseberry Park Hospital, providing an excellent therapeutic environment for patients and staff alike.
The ward is co-located with:
- Westerdale South (organic mental health diagnoses)
- General Adult inpatient services
- Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- Forensic inpatient services
This enables strong clinical collaboration and seamless care pathways. Most admissions come from the Teesside area, supported by well-established relationships with community mental health teams, crisis services, and liaison teams.
The Role
You will provide consultant-level psychiatric leadership to Westerdale North Ward, working closely with a skilled and enthusiastic multidisciplinary team (MDT).
While the ward has 20 beds, a highly experienced Nurse Consultant (Approved Clinician) provides additional senior clinical input. As a result, your direct caseload will typically be 10–12 patients, allowing time for high-quality, reflective clinical practice.
- Job Plan
- 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week
- 7.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC)
- 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)
- All clinical PAs are delivered within Westerdale North Ward
- No routine cross-cover of other services
Key Responsibilities
As Consultant Psychiatrist, you will:
- Provide clinical and medical leadership to the MDT
- Lead the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning for inpatients
- Attend and contribute to the daily weekday MDT “report-out” meeting (board round)
- Review all new admissions promptly and develop holistic treatment plans
- Conduct regular patient reviews, monitoring progress and risk
- Participate in CPA meetings, admission and discharge planning, and family meetings
- Maintain strong, compassionate relationships with patients, families, and carers, aligned with the Triangle of Care principles
- Model safe, evidence-based prescribing in line with national guidance
- Fulfil statutory responsibilities under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
