Overview of the Opportunity
Bluebird House offers a unique chance to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young people requiring secure mental health care. As the South of England’s medium secure inpatient unit for children and adolescents, the service sits within the national forensic CAMHS network and provides highly specialised assessment and treatment for young people with complex needs.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint a Consultant Psychiatrist with expertise in Forensic Psychiatry and/or Child and Adolescent Mental Health to join the established team. This post combines senior clinical responsibility with the opportunity to influence service development across the region, and potentially step into a Clinical Lead role.
This is an ideal position for a consultant who is motivated to shape innovative, trauma-informed care within a secure environment while supporting the next generation of clinicians.

Core Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership
- Provide senior psychiatric leadership within a medium secure forensic CAMHS setting
- Act as Responsible Clinician and Approved Clinician for detained patients
- Lead complex assessments, treatment planning, and risk management processes
- Ensure care is evidence-based, trauma-informed, and patient-centred
Multidisciplinary Working
- Collaborate closely with psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, education, and social care professionals
- Support and supervise specialty doctors, resident doctors, and trainees
- Maintain strong links with community CAMHS, safeguarding services, and acute hospitals
Service Development and Quality
- Contribute to governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
- Participate in service planning and development at local and network level
- Support innovation in secure mental health pathways for young people
Education and Research
- Take part in teaching programmes and supervision roles
- Engage in research, evaluation, and continuous professional development
- Contribute to appraisal and revalidation processes

Essential Qualifications and Eligibility
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- MRCPsych or an equivalent postgraduate qualification
Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register in Forensic Psychiatry and/or Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (or within 6 months of CCT)
- Approved Clinician (AC) status at the point of appointment
- Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act
