About the Role

This is a rare and highly rewarding opportunity to join Bluebird House, the South of England’s medium secure inpatient unit for children and young people. As part of the national forensic CAMHS network, Bluebird House plays a pivotal role in delivering specialist mental health care to young people with complex forensic and psychiatric needs.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with a background in Forensic Psychiatry and/or Child & Adolescent Mental Health to provide senior clinical leadership within this unique service. Alongside clinical responsibilities, there is scope to take on a Clinical Lead role, helping shape service development both locally and nationally.

This role offers the chance to influence young lives at a critical point, within a trauma-informed, evidence-based environment supported by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Care

  • Provide consultant-level psychiatric care within a medium secure forensic CAMHS setting
  • Act as Responsible Clinician and Approved Clinician for detained patients
  • Lead complex assessments, treatment planning, and risk management
  • Work collaboratively with families, carers, and external agencies

Multidisciplinary & Service Development

  • Provide senior leadership within a well-established MDT including psychology, nursing, education, social work, and therapies
  • Support and supervise specialty doctors, resident doctors, and trainees
  • Contribute to governance, quality improvement, and service redesign
  • Maintain strong working relationships with community CAMHS, acute trusts, and safeguarding partners

Education, Research & Professional Development

  • Participate in teaching and training programmes
  • Contribute to audit, research, and evidence-based practice
  • Engage in appraisal, revalidation, and continuing professional development

Essential Qualifications & Registration

Applicants must meet the following criteria by the time of appointment:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • MRCPsych or equivalent postgraduate qualification
  • Inclusion on (or eligibility for) the Specialist Register
  • Forensic Psychiatry and/or

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (within 6 months of CCT)

  • Approved Clinician (AC) status
  • Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act
  • Check GMC registration requirements
