Lead Mental Health Care at the Front Door of Acute Services
This Consultant in General Adult Liaison Psychiatry post offers an opportunity to play a central leadership role within a well-established and high-performing liaison psychiatry service at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. The service sits at the heart of acute care, supporting patients with complex mental health needs who present to the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit, and inpatient wards.
You will provide senior clinical leadership, expert assessment, and decisive risk management, working closely with acute hospital colleagues to ensure safe, timely, and compassionate care. The role combines hands-on clinical work with strategic input, teaching, and service development within a supportive and collaborative Trust.
Your Role and Impact
As a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist, you will:
- Deliver specialist psychiatric assessment and management for adults presenting with complex mental health needs in acute hospital settings.
- Act as Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act.
- Provide senior clinical oversight to the multidisciplinary team (MDT), supporting high-quality decision-making in high-pressure environments.
- Lead on risk formulation and management, balancing patient safety with recovery-focused care.
- Work collaboratively with emergency medicine, acute medicine, medical and surgical teams, community mental health services, and specialist pathways.
- The service is aligned with CORE24 standards, and you will contribute to pathway development, quality improvement initiatives, and service innovation in line with national best practice.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical and Professional Practice
- Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation.
- Ensure high standards of clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement.
- Undertake administrative duties linked to patient care efficiently and responsibly.
Leadership, Teaching & Supervision
- Provide appraisal, supervision, and professional support to junior medical staff.
- Ensure junior doctors work within the Working Time Directive and New Deal requirements.
- Contribute to the Trust’s internal education programme through teaching, lectures, and seminars.
Service Development & Governance
- Participate in service and business planning to support evolving models of care.
- Engage in annual job planning to adapt the role in line with service modernisation.
- Work closely with clinical managers and senior colleagues to ensure safe, effective service delivery.
- All practice is expected to align with GMC standards and professional codes of conduct.

Essential Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- MRCPsych or recognised equivalent
- CCT in General Adult Psychiatry, or within 12 months of CCT at interview
- Eligible for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register
- Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
Experience
- Experience working in General Adult Psychiatry
- Experience managing detained patients and Mental Health Act inpatients at senior trainee or consultant level
- Experience of audit and a sound understanding of clinical governance principles
