Job Description

Make Safety Matter – Every Day

The University of Reading is looking for a Construction & Estates Health and Safety Advisor who is passionate about making a real difference. This role is ideal for someone who builds trust quickly, communicates with confidence, and believes that positive safety culture is created through collaboration—not enforcement alone.

You will join a multi-disciplinary Health & Safety team, working closely with colleagues across the University’s estates, facilities, and construction activities to ensure that health and safety standards are embedded into everyday practice.

The Role at a Glance

In this role, you will:

  • Provide practical health and safety advice across construction, estates, and facilities activities
  • Support compliance with UK health and safety legislation, including CDM Regulations and Control of Asbestos Regulations
  • Work proactively with contractors, consultants, and internal teams to promote safe systems of work
  • Review and support risk assessments, method statements, and contractor compliance
  • Contribute to incident investigations, audits, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Promote a positive, enabling safety culture that balances legal compliance with operational realities
  • Undertake occasional out-of-hours site visits or emergency response, as required

What We’re Looking For

You’ll be someone who brings both technical knowledge and strong interpersonal skills. You will ideally have:

  • A clear commitment to promoting a positive health and safety culture
  • A NEBOSH Construction Certificate, or be actively working towards it (we’re open to discussion if this is your only gap)

Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation, particularly:

  • Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
  • Control of Asbestos Regulations
  • Experience in estates, facilities management, or construction environments
  • Confidence working with contractors and outsourced service providers
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to build credibility quickly
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities while working both independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with risk assessment techniques, audits, and incident investigations
  • A full UK driving licence
