Job Description

About the University

The University of Oxford is a globally recognised institution where historic architecture and world-leading research exist side by side. Our estate reflects this diversity—ranging from modern research facilities to listed heritage buildings—each requiring expert stewardship to ensure safety, compliance, and long-term sustainability.

By joining Oxford, you become part of a community that values expertise, integrity, and collaboration. We are committed to supporting staff wellbeing, professional development, and inclusive working practices, while delivering an environment that enables teaching, research, and student life to thrive.

About the Estates Compliance Team

The Estates Services Compliance Team is responsible for safeguarding more than 300 buildings across the University’s operational, residential, and postgraduate accommodation portfolio. Working in close partnership with colleagues across facilities management, sustainability, building services, and space planning, the team ensures that statutory compliance is embedded into everything we do.

Our work directly protects students, staff, visitors, and the long-term value of one of the most significant estates in the UK.

The Role

As Compliance Surveyor, you will take a lead role in managing and delivering compliance-focused projects across the University’s UK estate. This includes oversight of fire safety, asbestos management, environmental compliance, and health and safety-related building works.

You will work independently across a wide range of property types—research laboratories, teaching spaces, residential accommodation, and historic buildings—making informed decisions that balance safety, legislation, and operational needs.

This role is well suited to a confident professional who enjoys autonomy, problem-solving, and responsibility within a complex, high-profile environment.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and deliver statutory compliance and safety projects across a varied property portfolio
  • Provide expert oversight of fire safety systems, both active and passive, and associated legislation
  • Manage asbestos, environmental, and health and safety compliance programmes
  • Oversee contractors and consultants, ensuring works are delivered safely, on time, and to specification
  • Apply building regulations, CDM 2015 requirements, and the Building Safety Act in practice
  • Support reactive and planned building fabric repairs in complex or high-risk environments
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders to maintain compliance standards
  • Maintain accurate records and provide clear technical advice to inform decision-making

About You

You will bring a strong technical background and the confidence to manage compliance risks within a large and diverse estate.

Essential requirements include:

  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. RICS or CIOB)
  • Significant experience in project delivery and contractor management
  • Strong working knowledge of UK building regulations and compliance frameworks
  • In-depth understanding of fire safety legislation and fire engineering principles
  • Experience managing complex building fabric issues in commercial or institutional settings
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, with the ability to prioritise a demanding workload
