About the Role
The Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications for the post of Senior Medical Statistician and Director of the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU). The appointment will be made at Associate Professor or Professor level, depending on experience.
The UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)-registered Brighton and Sussex CTU, co-located with the Department of Primary Care and Public Health, conducts clinical trials and research studies across a broad spectrum of medical fields. This includes trials involving drugs, medical devices, digital health innovations, and psychological interventions.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead the only registered CTU within Kent, Surrey, and Sussex, guiding its growth and strategic development. You will play a key role in strengthening collaborations with academia, the NHS, and industry, while promoting high-quality, innovative clinical research that has local, regional, and national impact.
Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership for the Brighton and Sussex CTU, ensuring its continued development and alignment with national standards.
Lead a personal research programme in medical statistics, clinical trials, or related fields.
Manage and mentor a team of statisticians and collaborate with the Director of Operations, Trial Managers, and Data Management Team.
Represent the CTU at the UKCRC Statisticians’ Network and other relevant professional forums.
Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, particularly in statistical education for BMBS students.
Support the strategic planning and research leadership activities of BSMS and its partner institutions.
Build partnerships across the University of Sussex, the University of Brighton, and NHS Trusts.
At Professorial level, the postholder will demonstrate a sustained national and international reputation in research, innovation, and leadership, and will take on formal leadership roles within the School.
About You
You will have:
A strong track record in medical statistics, biostatistics, or clinical trials methodology, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and successful research grants.
Substantial experience in leading and managing research teams within academic or clinical settings.
Proven ability to design, conduct, and oversee high-quality clinical research.
Experience collaborating across disciplines and sectors, including academia, healthcare, and industry.
A commitment to excellence in teaching, research supervision, and mentoring.
Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
For appointment at Professor level, you should demonstrate outstanding contributions to your field, recognised internationally for research excellence and academic leadership.

Salary: Grade 9 (£58,225–£67,468) or Grade 10 (£69,488+)
