Job Description

Clinical Pharmacist – Exciting Opportunities at University Hospitals Birmingham

We are seeking enthusiastic and flexible Clinical Pharmacists who can work collaboratively within a team, contributing to the improvement of patient care and the optimal use of medicines across a range of settings.

The ideal candidate will be a motivated professional with strong communication skills and a passion for using their knowledge and experience to influence healthcare professionals in delivering high-quality care.

As part of our dynamic team, you will deliver a high standard, ward-based clinical pharmacy service with the support and guidance of our friendly colleagues. You will also have the opportunity to undertake 3-month rotations through various core clinical specialties, helping to build the clinical skills and knowledge needed to progress your career within the NHS to Band 7. Additionally, you’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) that supports the Acute Medicine Team, offering a comprehensive service.

About Us: University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) is one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK. We have clinical pharmacy positions available at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospital, with the opportunity for rotation at Solihull Hospital. We encourage you to pursue a clinical diploma (or equivalent RPS Foundation Pathway) and a non-medical prescribing qualification, with full support and dedicated time for professional development and education.

What We Offer:

  • A structured training pathway with the chance to develop core clinical pharmacy skills
  • Support for clinical diploma and non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Opportunities to work across different specialties and settings
  • A formal induction and continued professional development

We welcome applications from qualified pharmacists across all sectors, including those with limited hospital experience, looking to transition into a hospital pharmacy career. We will provide support for your professional growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize our advanced electronic patient record and prescription tool (PICs) to conduct medication reconciliations, optimize medication therapies, and verify discharge prescriptions.
  • Work with the Acute Medical Unit, ensuring excellent medicines reconciliation at the point of admission.
  • Serve as the Responsible Pharmacist in dispensaries, supporting workflows and clinically screening clinic charts across a range of specialties. This includes screening outpatient prescriptions at Good Hope and Heartlands Hospitals, with a chance to rotate to Solihull.
  • Participate in weekend, bank holiday, and late-night dispensary shifts, as well as on-call services, supported by senior pharmacists.

About You: We’re looking for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and is committed to delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care. If you have experience in an NHS or healthcare setting and are ready to continue developing your clinical pharmacy skills, we want to hear from you!

Why Work With Us? UHB is dedicated to creating the best environment for our staff to thrive. Our vision is to “Build Healthier Lives,” and we recognize that our talented staff are key to achieving this goal. We’re committed to:

  • Supporting your health and wellbeing, including offering flexible working arrangements where possible

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • A 4-year vocational Master’s degree in Pharmacy (or equivalent)
  • Membership of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Willingness to begin or have started a postgraduate clinical pharmacy qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

Experience:

  • Experience in an NHS/healthcare setting, working with clinicians at all levels
  • Post-registration experience as a hospital pharmacist or equivalent knowledge
  • Knowledge of risk management and service improvements
  • Understanding of national guidelines (e.g., NICE, NSF) and available resources for medicines information
