Role Overview
We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated Clinical Specialist Nurse to join the East Durham Community Hub and Intervention Team. This is a senior clinical role for a nurse who is passionate about delivering high-quality, evidence-based mental health care while providing professional leadership to nursing colleagues.
The post holder will play a pivotal role in shaping clinical standards, strengthening governance, and supporting the development of nursing practice across the service. You will work autonomously at an advanced level, contributing to clinical decision-making, leading nurse-led interventions, and promoting innovation in community mental health care.
A Non-Medical Prescribing (NMP) qualification is essential for this role.
What You Will Do
As a Clinical Specialist Nurse, you will combine advanced clinical practice with leadership, education, and service development responsibilities.
Clinical Leadership & Practice
- Provide expert clinical leadership in the assessment, treatment, and ongoing management of people with complex mental health needs
- Actively contribute to multidisciplinary clinical decision-making and risk management
- Deliver nurse-led diagnosis, care planning, and therapeutic interventions
- Prescribe safely and effectively within the NMC framework and Trust policies
- Support safe, person-centred care aligned with national and local standards
Professional Development & Supervision
- Lead and coordinate clinical supervision for nursing staff within the service
- Support nurses’ professional development, competence, and reflective practice
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate training and educational activities relevant to the specialty
- Act as a Practice Assessor / Supervisor and support learners in clinical placements
Governance, Quality & Improvement
- Ensure nursing practice aligns with the NMC Code of Conduct
- Embed evidence-based practice across the team
- Undertake and support clinical audit, service evaluation, and research activity
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives within the governance framework
- Promote safe medicines management and high standards of documentation

Essential Qualifications
- Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (RMN / RNLD / RGN or RNSC – CAMHS where applicable)
- Non-Medical Prescriber (Independent Prescriber) qualification
- Recognised Practice Assessor / Practice Supervisor (or willingness to achieve)
- Training in clinical supervision (or commitment to complete)
- Postgraduate diploma in a relevant subject, or willingness to work towards one
- Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Essential Experience
- Substantial experience working with people with complex mental health needs
- Proven expertise in clinical risk assessment and management
- Experience working with individuals who present risk behaviours
- Collaborative working with service users, families, and carers
- Effective multidisciplinary team working
- Active involvement in quality improvement initiatives
Essential Knowledge & Skills
- In-depth understanding of mental health legislation, including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
- Strong knowledge of safeguarding principles and application in practice
- Advanced understanding of clinical governance
- Competence in medicines management
- Knowledge of psychological and therapeutic models relevant to the specialty
- Excellent communication, leadership, and decision-making skills
