Job Description

About the Department

The Department of Neuromuscular Diseases is internationally recognised for excellence in both patient care and translational research. Our multidisciplinary teams span clinical neurology, genetics, imaging, and laboratory science, working together to understand the mechanisms behind neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders.

Our research directly informs the development of innovative diagnostics and therapies for conditions such as Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease (CMT), motor neurone disease, and Alzheimer’s disease, ensuring tangible benefits for patients and families.

About the Opportunity

We are inviting applications for a Clinical Research Fellow to join the research group led by Professor Mary Reilly. This post is part of the TRANSFORM–CMT (Trial Readiness Charcot Marie Tooth disease) programme, funded by Muscular Dystrophy UK for four years.

The project focuses on advancing a highly sensitive quantitative MRI fat-fraction outcome measure used in CMT clinical trials. Recent developments in artificial intelligence and MRI technology now allow this method to become faster, more accurate, and more reliable. Your role will be central to refining and implementing these advances across a national research network.

Key Responsibilities

As a Clinical Research Fellow, you will:

  • Contribute to the optimisation of MRI-based outcome measures using AI-assisted image acquisition and analysis
  • Clinically assess and recruit patients with inherited neuropathies at UCL and collaborating UK centres
  • Work closely with physicists, bioinformaticians, geneticists, clinicians, trial coordinators, and data managers

Receive structured training in:

  • Clinical evaluation of inherited neuropathies
  • MRI fat-fraction analysis
  • Clinical outcome measures
  • Genetic and data interpretation
  • Coordinate data collection and quality assurance across six UK research sites
  • Support ethical, regulatory, and governance processes in line with UK clinical research standards
  • An Honorary Clinical Contract will be sought with UCLH NHS Trust, subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
  • Start Date and Funding
  • Anticipated start: 1 August 2026
  • Funding: One year initially, with a strong expectation of extension for up to two additional years

Essential Criteria

By the start of the post, applicants must:

  • Hold full registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Have completed Core or Internal Medicine Training (CMT/IMT) and MRCP
  • Demonstrate experience in clinical neurology
  • Show evidence of participation in clinical research under supervision
  • Possess strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Be able to work independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team
