Core Focus and Development

In this role, you’ll primarily specialise in one neurological cancer pathway while collaborating across multiple tumour types, ensuring adaptability to evolving service demands and enriching your professional growth. You’ll advance through the ACCEND (Aspirant Cancer Career and Education Development) programme, aligning your practice with the Four Pillars of Nursing: clinical direct care, leadership and management, education, and research/evidence-based practice. This structured pathway will equip you to excel as a vital link in our multidisciplinary oncology team.

Key Responsibilities

Patient-Centred Support and Coordination

  • Serve as a dedicated keyworker, delivering tailored nursing expertise, education, and guidance to cancer patients and families.
  • Conduct comprehensive holistic needs assessments and craft personalised care strategies to address physical, emotional, and practical challenges.
  • Facilitate emotional counselling, symptom control, and navigation through treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or end-of-life care.
  • Coordinate diagnostics, therapy schedules, and post-treatment monitoring to promote continuity and efficiency.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Deliver accessible telephone triage and advisory services, ensuring prompt responses to patient queries.
  • Collaborate with oncologists, surgical teams, nutritionists, palliative specialists, and allied professionals to optimise outcomes.
  • Contribute actively to Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) discussions, advocating for patient perspectives in care planning.
  • Bridge gaps between services, streamlining referrals and transitions for uninterrupted support.

Education, Advocacy, and Innovation

  • Provide clear, empathetic explanations of diagnoses, treatment pathways, and self-management techniques to empower patients.
  • Champion patient rights and preferences within clinical and organisational settings.
  • Lead or facilitate community-based support networks and educational workshops for patients and carers.
  • Engage in quality audits, clinical research, and pathway enhancements, including the creation of updated guidelines.
  • Commit to lifelong learning by integrating the newest oncology nursing evidence, in line with NHS England’s Cancer Nursing Framework.
