Role overview
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for a Clinical Fellow (ST3 equivalent) in Stroke Medicine at Yeovil District Hospital. This non-training LAS post is well suited to doctors seeking focused experience in stroke care while preparing for MRCP, IMT, or future specialty training within the UK.
You will work within a supportive, consultant-led stroke service that values education, clinical governance, and professional development. The role provides exposure to both acute and rehabilitative stroke medicine, with opportunities to develop leadership and teaching skills at registrar level.
Key responsibilities
As a Clinical Fellow in Stroke Medicine, you will:
- Deliver registrar-level medical care to patients on the stroke ward, ensuring timely assessment, investigation, and management
- Lead at least one independent ward round per week, alongside active participation in consultant-led rounds
- Provide clinical supervision and guidance to Foundation Doctors and junior trainees
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including bedside teaching and case-based discussions
- Take part in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, and research activity
- Attend and engage in multidisciplinary team meetings, governance sessions, and weekly postgraduate teaching
- Gain exposure to outpatient stroke and TIA clinics to broaden clinical experience
Person specification
Essential qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Valid ALS / ACLS certification
Desirable qualifications
MRCP Part 1 (or evidence of preparation)
Essential experience
- Successful completion of Foundation Year 1 and 2 (or equivalent)
- Experience equivalent to CT1–CT2 level in internal medicine or related specialties
Desirable experience
- Prior experience in stroke medicine or neurology
- Minimum of two years’ NHS experience
