The Opportunity
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is seeking to appoint an experienced, practising General Practitioner to a senior clinical academic role at Associate Professor or Professor level. This appointment will strengthen the Department of Primary Care & Public Health and contribute to BSMS’s mission to deliver outstanding education, impactful research, and excellent clinical leadership.
This is a senior career-grade position with a strong emphasis on academic leadership. The postholder will shape research, education, and strategic priorities within the School and the wider University, while maintaining active clinical practice within the NHS.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop an independent and sustainable programme of high-quality research in general practice or primary care.
- Provide academic leadership in research-led undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Contribute to School- and University-level strategy, governance, and academic management.
- Support and enable research engagement among GP colleagues across BSMS and the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) regions of Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with NHS organisations, training bodies, and external stakeholders.
- Maintain an active clinical role (normally 0.2 FTE) within a local GP practice, supported by an appropriate honorary NHS contract.
At Professor level, the role includes a sustained national and international contribution to the discipline, with demonstrable excellence in research, education, innovation, and leadership, alongside formal School-level leadership responsibilities.
About You
You are a practising GP with a strong academic profile and a clear commitment to advancing general practice through research, education, and leadership.
You will bring:
- GMC registration with a licence to practise and inclusion on the GP Register.
An established or emerging programme of high-quality research, with particular interest in areas aligned to BSMS strengths such as:
- Global health and infectious disease
- Cancer
- Mental health
- Health inequalities and population health
- Prevention and coastal community health
- Experience of contributing to, and ideally leading, undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
- A collaborative approach to working across academic, clinical, and professional boundaries.
At Professorial level, you will also demonstrate sustained excellence and leadership at national and international level, with a strong track record of research income, publications, and academic influence.
