The Opportunity

Brighton & Sussex Medical School invites applications from experienced, practising General Practitioners for appointment at Associate Professor or Professor level within the Department of Primary Care & Public Health.

This is a senior clinical academic role offering the opportunity to shape the future of general practice education and research within a highly respected medical school. You will contribute academic leadership in teaching, research, and strategic development, while maintaining an active clinical role in primary care.

The post is designed for clinicians who are motivated to influence undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, advance impactful research, and strengthen the connection between academic general practice and NHS services.

Your Role and Impact

As a senior member of the academic faculty, you will:

  • Lead and develop an independent programme of high-quality research
  • Contribute to departmental and School-level research leadership
  • Deliver and enhance research-led teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
  • Provide leadership in the design and delivery of general practice teaching across the BMBS curriculum
  • Support and inspire medical students’ engagement with general practice as a career
  • Strengthen partnerships with GP practices and external organisations to support placements, student projects, and research activity
  • Work collaboratively across BSMS, NHS partners, and the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) in Kent, Surrey and Sussex

For appointments at Professor level, the role includes a sustained and internationally recognised contribution to research, education, and leadership, alongside formal leadership responsibilities within the School.

You will play a key role in supporting primary care colleagues to engage in research and contribute to the development of an active, research-enabled general practice community.

Teaching Leadership

You will take a prominent role in delivering and advancing teaching in general practice, ensuring students receive an outstanding, authentic experience of primary care across the curriculum. This includes:

Clinical Commitment

The postholder will be expected to:

  • Maintain a 0.2 FTE clinical role within a local GP practice
  • Hold an appropriate honorary NHS contract with NHS England or a relevant body
  • This ensures continued integration of academic leadership with frontline clinical practice.
