Job Description

Role Summary

Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications from practising GPs for a senior academic appointment at either Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of General Practice. This position sits within the Department of Primary Care & Public Health and will strengthen the School’s existing expertise in primary care research, education and community engagement.

Senior academic roles at this level require candidates who can demonstrate leadership in teaching, research, and strategic development—helping drive forward BSMS’s vision and contributing to the broader academic life of the University.

What You Will Do

In this post, you will:

Develop and lead an independent research programme that aligns with BSMS strengths, including global health and infection, cancer, mental health, health inequalities, prevention and the health of coastal and underserved communities.

Contribute actively to departmental research culture, provide research leadership and support grant-generating activity.

Teach across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, ensuring students receive an excellent, research-informed learning experience in general practice.

Work closely with colleagues across BSMS, local GP practices, and the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for Kent, Surrey and Sussex to expand primary care research and encourage GP involvement in academic activity.

Lead and support general-practice–related student initiatives, career development projects and community-based education.

Strengthen external partnerships with NHS bodies and training networks, ensuring high-quality GP placements and student-selected opportunities.

For applicants at Professor level, the role also requires evidence of sustained national and international impact in research, outstanding educational leadership and a significant portfolio of academic service. You will also hold formal leadership responsibilities that shape the future direction of the School.

The successful candidate will also take up a 0.2 FTE clinical role in a local GP practice and maintain an honorary contract with NHS England or an equivalent statutory body.
