Overview of the Role

Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is seeking a clinically active GP to join the Department of Primary Care & Public Health as either an Associate Professor or Professor of General Practice. This senior academic appointment will enhance BSMS’s established strengths in research, teaching and clinical collaboration across the region.

The successful candidate will act as an academic leader—driving innovative research, shaping the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum, mentoring early-career colleagues, and contributing to school-level strategy and governance.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a committed GP researcher with a strong academic track record and a passion for high-quality education. Applicants should have an established research profile aligned with one or more of BSMS’s strategic strengths, such as:

  • Global and public health
  • Infectious disease
  • Cancer research
  • Mental health
  • Health inequalities
  • Prevention and population health
  • Coastal and community health

You will lead your own research group, contribute to research strategy across the department and wider school, and support GP colleagues across the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for Kent, Surrey & Sussex in developing research capacity within primary care.

Key Responsibilities

Research

  • Develop a high-impact programme of research, including grant capture and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Provide academic leadership to strengthen research culture within the department.
  • Support collaborative work across universities, NHS partners, and regional research networks.

Teaching and Education

  • Lead and innovate in the delivery of general practice teaching within the BMBS programme.
  • Ensure students experience outstanding GP placements, Student Selected Components and research project opportunities.
  • Mentor students pursuing GP careers and support student-led primary care initiatives.

Leadership & External Engagement

  • Build strong partnerships with NHS organisations, training hubs and GP practices regionally.
  • Contribute to school governance, strategic academic planning, and cross-institutional committees.
  • For appointments at Professorial level, demonstrate sustained national and international leadership in research, education and academic service.

Clinical Requirement

The postholder will hold a 0.2 FTE clinical role within a local GP practice and will require an appropriate honorary contract with NHS England or another relevant body.
