Role Overview
The University of Sussex, in partnership with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, is seeking an experienced Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology to take a leading role in clinical research, trials, and academic oncology development.
This senior appointment combines academic leadership with clinical consultant responsibilities. A key focus of the role will be leading and expanding the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit, alongside strengthening oncology research across the region.
The post sits within a growing cancer research ecosystem that includes the Sussex Cancer Research Centre, which brings together academic and NHS partners to advance cancer treatment and outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Research Leadership
- Lead and develop a major programme of oncology research
Direct the Clinical Trials Unit and expand its trial portfolio
Drive innovation in cancer clinical trials across solid and haematological malignancies
Secure external research funding and support grant applications
Strengthen collaboration across NHS and academic partners
Academic Contribution
- Provide strategic leadership in teaching, research, and innovation
Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
Supervise clinical and academic trainees
Support development of research-led teaching within BSMS
Clinical Practice
- Hold an honorary consultant post (0.5 FTE) with NHS clinical duties
Deliver specialist oncology services within University Hospitals Sussex
Contribute to multidisciplinary cancer care teams
Strategic Development
- Build a sustainable academic oncology group within Sussex
Support expansion of clinical trials infrastructure and recruitment
Develop partnerships across national and international networks
About You
You are an established clinical academic with a strong background in oncology and clinical trials.
You will bring:
- A CCT in Medical Oncology or Clinical Oncology
Proven leadership in clinical research and trials
A strong record of securing research funding
Experience in academic teaching and clinical supervision
Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams across NHS and university settings
Commitment to developing high-impact cancer research programmes
This role is suited to individuals who can operate at a senior strategic level while maintaining active clinical and research engagement.
