About the Role
Brighton & Sussex Medical School is seeking a practicing General Practitioner to join as an Associate Professor or Professor of General Practice. This senior academic post offers the opportunity to lead research, teaching, and strategic initiatives within the Department of Primary Care & Public Health.
The successful candidate will:
- Lead an independent research programme aligned with BSMS strengths, including global health, infection, cancer, mental health, and cross-cutting themes such as health inequalities, population health, and coastal community health.
- Support research leadership and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in general practice.
- Work with BSMS colleagues and across the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Kent, Surrey & Sussex, encouraging wider engagement with primary care research.
- Support student-led activities, placements, and projects in general practice.
- Hold a 0.2 FTE clinical role in a local GP practice, with an honorary NHS contract.
- For professorial level, applicants are expected to demonstrate:
- Sustained, internationally recognized contribution to their field.
- Exceptional performance in research, teaching, leadership, and innovation.
- Ability to undertake formal School-level leadership responsibilities.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
- Qualified GP, registered with the GMC
- Evidence of research leadership and an established academic portfolio.
- Experience in teaching, curriculum development, and mentoring at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Desirable Skills & Expertise:
- Research in primary care, coastal or community health, population health, or related areas.
- Engagement with clinical networks and external stakeholders to enhance medical education.
- Track record in securing research funding or leading collaborative research projects.
