Join Aston University’s Student Counselling Team

Aston University is seeking a qualified and experienced Counsellor or Psychotherapist to join its dynamic and student-focused Counselling Service. This part-time permanent role plays a vital part in promoting student wellbeing and mental health on campus.

We welcome applications from those with:

A Level 7 or MSc qualification in Counselling or Psychotherapy

A minimum of 3 years of post-qualification, supervised practice

Accreditation or registration with a recognised UK body (BACP, UKCP, BABCP, HPC, BPS)

Experience delivering brief, solution-focused therapy, ideally in a higher education or fast-paced setting

A strong understanding of cultural competence in counselling

Key Responsibilities

Provide short-term, person-centred therapeutic counselling (usually up to 6 sessions per student)

Support students experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, self-harm, and academic-related stress

Conduct clinical risk assessments and make appropriate referrals

Actively contribute to wellbeing initiatives, group sessions, and drop-in services

Collaborate with other support services across the university as part of a holistic student wellbeing approach

Work predominantly on campus, with year-round presence expected due to student demand

Preferred Specialisms (in addition to essential qualifications)

We are especially interested in professionals with experience or training in:

Humanistic Integrative Therapy

Supporting survivors of sexual violence or abuse

Trauma, grief, and bereavement support

Managing self-harm and suicidal ideation

Addressing cultural, spiritual, or faith-based concerns in therapy
