Job Description

The Opportunity

The University of Reading is seeking a Campus Design Standards Manager to join its Space & Asset Management Team within the Estates Directorate. This is a pivotal role for a professional who enjoys shaping environments, setting clear standards, and delivering improvements that people notice and use every day.

You will play a central part in defining how the University’s campuses look, feel, and function, ensuring that internal and external spaces are consistent, accessible, compliant, and aligned with the University’s brand and long-term strategy.

Why This Role Matters

This position sits at the intersection of design, planning, compliance, and user experience. Your work will directly influence how students, staff, and visitors navigate and experience the campus.

A key early focus will be the review and redevelopment of signage and wayfinding, helping to create clarity and coherence across a complex estate. If you enjoy turning complexity into structure, influencing diverse stakeholders, and delivering visible, long-lasting improvements, this role offers a genuine opportunity to make a lasting impact.

Key Responsibilities

As Campus Design Standards Manager, you will:

  • Develop, document, and maintain design standards for internal and external campus spaces, including signage and wayfinding.
  • Lead projects to refresh and update standards, ensuring consistency across the estate.
  • Work closely with Estates colleagues and Creative & Print Services to align standards with branding, accessibility, and user needs.
  • Monitor compliance with approved standards and provide guidance across departments.
  • Manage signage and wayfinding data, budgets, and reporting, offering evidence-based recommendations.
  • Act as the University’s primary point of contact for all design standards enquiries.

About You

You will bring:

  • Proven experience delivering projects involving design standards, consultation, or space planning.
  • Strong organisational, analytical, and reporting skills, with confidence using Microsoft Office.
  • The ability to work independently while building effective relationships across a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A practical yet creative mindset, with the confidence to influence at different levels.
  • A degree or equivalent professional experience.

Desirable experience includes:

  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and the RIBA Plan of Work.
  • Experience in change management or complex operational environments.
  • Understanding of higher education estates or commissioning design and print services.
