About the Role

UCL invites applications for a permanent academic position in Systems and Networks, available at either Lecturer (Grade 8) or Associate Professor (Grade 9) level, depending on experience and track record.

This role is ideal for an academic with a strong foundation in computer systems and networking, who is motivated to contribute to world-leading research, deliver high-quality teaching, and play an active role in academic leadership and service.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant, collaborative department and contribute to both core computer science teaching and interdisciplinary research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Education

  • Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in systems, networking, and related areas
  • Contribute to curriculum design and continuous programme development
  • Supervise undergraduate projects, MSc dissertations, and doctoral research students
  • Provide academic mentoring and pastoral support to students
  • Participate in assessment, feedback, and examination processes

Research and Scholarship

  • Conduct independent, high-quality research in systems and networking
  • Publish research outputs in leading international venues
  • Develop research proposals and secure external funding
  • Supervise PhD and research-degree students
  • Contribute to collaborative and interdisciplinary research activities

Academic Service and Engagement

  • Participate in departmental administration and leadership activities
  • Engage with the wider academic and professional communities
  • Contribute to knowledge exchange and public engagement initiatives
  • Research activity may align with national digital and infrastructure priorities, including secure digital systems and network resilience

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline
  • Strong expertise in computer systems and networking
  • Evidence of high-quality research in computer science
  • Ability to contribute across undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes
  • Engagement with the international scholarly or professional community
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Desirable Criteria

  • Proven ability to attract research funding
  • Experience supervising PhD students
  • Contributions to interdisciplinary research
  • Leadership experience appropriate to career stage
