Job Description

Join Our Team as an Associate Practitioner in Cellular Pathology

About the Department

Our Cellular Pathology team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is dedicated to delivering high-quality diagnostic services that directly support patient care across West Sussex. Based primarily at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, with a satellite lab at Worthing Hospital, we process around 35,000–40,000 histology specimens each year. These come from sites including St Richard’s, Worthing, and Southlands Hospital in Shoreham.

Beyond standard histology, our work includes immunocytochemistry (ICC), special stains, non-gynaecological diagnostic cytology, and digital pathology. The main lab at St Richard’s operates Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 5:30pm, while the Worthing site runs from 8:00am to 5:00pm. There is no on-site lab coverage at Southlands.

You’ll be mainly based at St Richard’s but will rotate to Worthing as needed. We follow a 9-day working fortnight pattern within these hours, helping maintain a healthy work-life balance.

The Role

As an Associate Practitioner, you’ll play a vital hands-on part in our busy lab, contributing to accurate and timely diagnostics. Key duties include:

  • Performing routine equipment maintenance
  • Entering specimen data accurately
  • Assisting with specimen cut-up
  • Carrying out paraffin wax embedding, microtomy (sectioning), and haematoxylin & eosin (H&E) staining

You’ll also take on delegated responsibility for managing departmental consumables, such as ordering supplies and tracking stock, under the guidance of our Lead Biomedical Scientist.

Collaboration is key—you’ll work closely with our Health and Safety and Quality teams to help maintain compliance with UKAS accreditation and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards.

We provide comprehensive training, and you’ll be supported to build and demonstrate competencies in a supportive timeframe, guided by our departmental training officer.

This is a non-HCPC registered role, so you won’t authorise results or take final responsibility for issued reports. You’ll work as part of a skilled team, performing a range of routine and specialist procedures under the direction of registered practitioners, applying your judgement and knowledge to ensure high-quality, efficient service delivery.
