About Us

The UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS) is seeking to appoint an Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in the History of Modern Science. STS is a leading centre for research and teaching in science, technology, and society, interpreting these fields in a broad and inclusive way.

We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

19th-century history of science

History of the Industrial Revolution

History of modern science

History of imperial science

About the Role

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and related academic support within the department. Key responsibilities include:

Teaching undergraduate and master’s modules in the relevant subject areas.

Providing timely marking and assessment feedback.

Undertaking administrative tasks related to module delivery and STS degree programmes.

Participating actively in the academic life of the department.

The primary teaching responsibility will likely be for:

HPSC00139: History of Science 2 (second-year undergraduate module).
Further teaching or assessment duties may be assigned as appropriate.

Additional responsibilities may include:

Contributing to assessment on other modules.

Delivering one-off sessions for undergraduate and master’s students.

Supporting departmental activities such as student recruitment, academic tutoring, and pastoral support.

About You

Applicants should demonstrate:

Expertise in the history of modern science and science and technology studies (STS).

Experience teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

A PhD in a relevant field (or equivalent professional experience).

A strong commitment to inclusive, collaborative, and high-quality teaching.

The appointee must be available to teach during scheduled term times. The expected teaching commitment is approximately 7.3 contact hours per week per module.
