About the Role

The University of Sussex is seeking a dynamic and committed Assistant Professor to join the Drama, Theatre and Performance team on a one-year fixed-term contract. This is an exciting opportunity to teach and support students across practical and theoretical modules, and to contribute to a vibrant academic and creative community.

You will play a key role in delivering undergraduate teaching, supporting creative work, and shaping the department’s continued growth in performance research and education.

Key Responsibilities

Teach and assess a range of undergraduate modules in drama, theatre, and performance

Deliver practical and theoretical content in areas such as:

Theatre-making and directing

Devising and performance composition

Experimental performance

Text-based performance analysis

Supervise undergraduate dissertations and practice-based projects

Support students’ creative processes and academic development

Contribute to curriculum design and programme enhancement

Participate in student recruitment and outreach activities

Collaborate in wider departmental activities, events, and community engagement

About You

We’re looking for a collaborative and innovative teacher or scholar-practitioner who is enthusiastic about arts education and student development.

You may be an Early Career Academic or a creative professional with teaching experience. You should be committed to inclusive, socially engaged, and forward-thinking teaching and research practices.

You’ll bring subject knowledge and teaching experience in one or more of the following areas:

Directing

Theatre-making

Performance analysis

Devised and collaborative practices

Queer, anti-racist, feminist or ecological performance theory
