Job Description

About the Research Project

NEWREPUBLIC is an ambitious, European Research Council–funded programme examining one of today’s most pressing political questions: how ideas challenge autocratic rule—and when those ideas succeed in motivating people to resist.

At its core, the project explores:

  • The beliefs and narratives that energise anti-autocratic movements
  • The real-world effectiveness of those ideas as political messages

By combining rigorous quantitative methods with policy-focused outputs, NEWREPUBLIC aims to advance academic knowledge while informing democratic resilience efforts globally.

Your Role in the Project

As Research Fellow in Anti-Autocratic Messaging, you will be a central contributor to the intellectual and practical success of NEWREPUBLIC. Working closely with the Principal Investigator, two PhD researchers, and a Project Officer, you will help shape both the research findings and their wider impact.

This is a role for a researcher who values independence, collaboration, and applied relevance, and who wants their work to matter beyond academia.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing nationally representative surveys with embedded survey experiments
  • Leading quantitative analysis of public opinion data from three African countries
  • Collaborating on research design, data interpretation, and publication strategy
  • Co-authoring articles for top-tier political science journals
  • Translating academic findings into policy-relevant and public-facing outputs
  • Presenting findings at international conferences, workshops, and policy forums
  • Supporting future funding bids and follow-on research agendas

You will be encouraged to help steer the project’s intellectual direction and to develop a research profile that extends well beyond the project’s formal end date.

Research Environment at Sussex

You will be based in the Department of Politics, an internationally respected centre for political research and teaching. The department hosts:

  • The Centre for the Study of Corruption
  • The Sussex European Institute
  • Research strengths in democratic resilience, protest politics, populism, and governance

NEWREPUBLIC also collaborates closely with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS)—consistently ranked among the world’s leading development research institutions—and the School for Progressive Futures.

Early-career researchers receive tailored support through the Sussex Researcher School, including mentoring, training, and grant-development guidance.

About You

You will be a motivated political scientist committed to long-term research on anti-autocratic movements and political communication.

Essential Criteria

  • A PhD in Political Science or a closely related discipline
  • A publication record appropriate to career stage in peer-reviewed journals
  • Strong expertise in advanced quantitative research methods
  • Demonstrated experience with survey experiments and public opinion analysis
  • Substantive interest in political messaging, political behaviour, discourse, or ideology

Desirable Experience

  • Conference presentations and public engagement activity
  • Experience contributing to research funding applications
  • Subject expertise in African politics, autocracy, democratic resilience, or protest movements
  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior researchers
