Job Description
About the Role
The Welsh Government is seeking an Archives Accreditation Adviser to manage and develop the Archive Service Accreditation Scheme in Wales.
The postholder will ensure archive services across Wales are supported in applying for and maintaining accreditation, and in meeting requirements under the Public Records Act 1958. The role also includes responsibility for the Welsh Government’s statutory duties under Section 60 of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994.
You will provide expert policy advice, represent the Welsh Government on archive-related issues, and lead projects that enhance archive services — particularly around digital access, audience development, marketing, and sector growth.
This is a high-profile, externally facing position offering significant opportunities to shape the future of archives in Wales.
Key Responsibilities
Provide policy advice to Ministers on local archive services and contribute to strategy and policy development.
Administer the Archive Service Accreditation Scheme in Wales, including advisory and validation visits and attendance at UK Accreditation Panel meetings.
Oversee implementation of Section 60 of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994 and ensure compliance with statutory duties.
Liaise with The National Archives (UK) on matters related to the Public Records Act 1958 and the Places of Deposit system in Wales.
Develop and manage programmes and projects that strengthen the Welsh archive sector, with a focus on digital innovation and outreach.
Monitor and report on budgets and project expenditure.
Assess and advise on funding applications to schemes administered by the Culture Division.
Build effective relationships with partners across Wales and the wider UK, including local authorities, professional bodies, and national institutions.
Represent the Welsh Government at meetings and working groups such as the Records at Risk Group and the ARA Volunteering Awards.
Maintain robust evidence and data on the state of the archive sector.
Prepare Ministerial briefings, responses, and policy documents.
Provide internal advice to colleagues on archive-related issues, including the designation of new public records bodies.
Undertake line management responsibilities and contribute to wider team priorities as required.
Development Opportunities
This is a dynamic role that offers:
Extensive engagement with archive services across Wales, providing professional advice and sector leadership.
Direct involvement in administering a UK-wide accreditation scheme.
Experience developing digital access, inclusivity, and community engagement initiatives.
Opportunities to manage projects, funding, and partnerships that promote the use of archives in areas such as health, wellbeing, and cultural heritage.
Skills development in policy design, research, fundraising, and grant management.
Additional Information
The role involves regular travel across Wales for site visits and occasional UK meetings (with possible overnight stays). A full, clean UK driving licence is advantageous.
A reserve list may be held for similar future vacancies (valid for 12 months).
