Job Description

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Innovation Partnership Manager to join the University and support the delivery of the University Innovation Strategy. Working closely with the College of Science and Engineering (COSE) and across the University, this role will provide critical leadership to the University and its ambition to increase the value of its engagements with its partners, as well as to establish new meaningful relationships with industry, the public sector, and innovation organisations. The position will be located within the Innovation, Engagement, and Entrepreneurship Directorate, specifically the Innovation Partnerships Team, and will collaborate closely with the Economic Development Directorate.

The Innovation Partnerships team was formed to maximise the value of academic collaboration with the public, private, and industrial sectors. It will accomplish this by establishing University approaches to forming and maintaining strategically valued partnerships that are mutually advantageous, as well as by collaborating closely with academics to generate a network of innovation linkages and opportunities of interest to the university. This role will collaborate closely with COSE academics and college teams to increase meaningful relationships, engagements, and opportunities aligned with these technology areas and the sectors or markets to which they contribute, in line with the University’s strategic ambition to grow its critical enabling technology capability and capacity (photonics, quantum, semiconductor, communications). Examples include space, healthcare, 5G/6G, and advanced manufacturing. Working with the Economic Development Directorate, the job will assist the University in proactively pursuing large collaborative opportunities and responding to regional, national, and worldwide financing opportunities.

The role’s success will be measured by the development of important strategic connections, notably with industry, as well as an increase in funding for the University as a result of increased involvement and collaboration. As part of the central team, the job will also work across all schools to develop COSE partnership or cooperation prospects, as well as provide leadership and advice to grow the University’s portfolio through Innovate UK, KTPs, and other collaborative engagement mechanisms.

The Senior Partnership Manager will help to achieve innovation strategy goals, specifically increasing new/additional industrial/commercial income.

The positions will supplement and give leadership assistance to current industry engagement teams. An operational model for central and college teams is being developed, particularly in institutions with current or expanding engagement teams, as are definitions of strategic partnerships and processes connected to strategic projects.

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Assist the University and COSE with delivering the innovative Strategy, particularly the objective to scale and strengthen partnership working and increase the value of its innovative engagements.

3. Encourage the establishment and implementation of corporate strategic collaborations that are specifically aligned with the College of Science and Engineering, as well as the strengthening of current COSE strategic alliances.

4. Create new cooperation opportunities for the College of Science and Engineering that have the potential to extend beyond one college, e.g., across other colleges, and are deemed institutionally beneficial relationships.

5. Collaborating with COSE, important academics, and the Economic Development Team to create propositions and big collaborative opportunities that are aligned with institutional/college strategic objectives. This post will be particularly connected with the University’s ambitions for key technologies and increased engagement/opportunity in relevant sectors or new markets, as well as with relevant industry and government bodies.

6. Lead and support internal teams in developing a pipeline of cooperation prospects for UKRI, public, innovation, and industrial financing.

7. Provide leadership and assistance to COSE College Management, academics, and researchers regarding industry engagement, as well as support in identifying possibilities to increase or deepen connections for mutual benefit.

8. Collaborating with a team of Sn Partnership managers and engagement teams throughout the institution to create cross-institutional professional engagement practices and procedures. This will include an examination of business engagement platforms such as CRM.

9. Collaborate with professional service teams, especially Research Services, to develop institutional capacity and expertise to expand the University/COSE portfolio of Innovate UK, KTP, and other industry engagement mechanisms.

10. Build and foster external networks (business, government, and RTOs) to provide insight into the University and promote University/College/Academic development.

11. To support marketing, advertising, and events aimed at promoting University Innovation’s accomplishments, partnerships, and partnership successes.
