About the Position
Great Ormond Street Hospital is looking for an experienced and motivated Pharmacy Automation Coordinator to join its Pharmacy team.
This Band 6 position will focus on the safe and effective use of pharmacy automation throughout the hospital. The successful candidate will coordinate automated dispensing cabinets, robotic dispensing equipment and the Aerocom pneumatic tube system, helping ensure medicines are stored, prepared and delivered efficiently.
You will work across Pharmacy, IT, clinical services and external technology suppliers. A major part of the role will involve identifying technical or operational problems, supporting staff training, reviewing incidents and helping introduce improvements to automated pharmacy services.
The post also carries line-management responsibilities. You will supervise Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Assistants and Porters working within the distribution service, supporting recruitment, induction, staff development, rota management, appraisals, attendance and performance.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
Managing and maintaining pharmacy distribution procedures, particularly those relating to automated systems.
Reviewing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure they remain consistent with Trust policies, professional requirements and national guidance.
Organising staff rotas and maintaining accurate HealthRoster information, including annual leave and sickness records.
Coordinating daily distribution activities alongside the Procurement, Homecare and Distribution Lead Technician and the Procurement and Distribution Senior Technician.
Providing leadership and specialist guidance on pharmacy automation to colleagues across the department.
Delivering appropriate training and helping pharmacy staff develop their understanding of automated dispensing and storage systems.
Investigating automation-related incidents and contributing to effective governance and risk management.
Carrying out audits and reviewing processes to identify opportunities to improve the performance of intelligent storage and automation systems.
Working as the principal pharmacy contact for ICT teams and external suppliers during the introduction or upgrade of automation equipment and software.
Supporting the safe, accurate and timely supply of medicines throughout the hospital.
Allocating work effectively, responding to operational queries and helping maintain a positive and collaborative working environment.
Supervising and developing distribution staff while maintaining appropriate standards of performance and attendance.

Essential Qualifications and Professional Registration
Applicants should have:
A BTEC/NVQ Level 3 qualification in Pharmaceutical Sciences, or an equivalent Level 3 pharmacy qualification such as the NVQ Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills or Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science.
Equivalent qualifications may be considered where supported by relevant pharmacy experience.
Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a Pharmacy Technician.
Desirable Qualifications
The following would be advantageous:
Educational Supervisor experience or qualification.
A leadership or management qualification, or demonstrable equivalent management experience.
Accreditation as an Accredited Checking Technician (ACPT).
Experience and Knowledge
Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
Relevant experience working as a qualified Pharmacy Technician within a hospital pharmacy environment.
Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
Experience with medicines dispensing, distribution and stock-control processes.
Experience training, supervising and assessing junior members of staff.
Practical knowledge of automated dispensing robots and intelligent medication storage systems.
Experience that would strengthen an application includes:
Working with medicines within a specialist paediatric environment.
Familiarity with the EPIC electronic healthcare system and electronic prescribing.
Skills and Personal Attributes
The successful applicant will need to demonstrate:

Experience in patient counselling and providing clear medication advice to patients and parents would also be beneficial.
