Job Description

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is currently seeking an experienced and compassionate Ward Manager to join the Male Acute Ward within Adult Mental Health Services at Lanchester Road Hospital, Durham. This leadership opportunity is ideal for a motivated mental health professional who is passionate about delivering high-quality inpatient care while leading and supporting multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced clinical environment.

The successful applicant will play a central role in managing ward operations, supporting staff development, maintaining patient safety, and contributing to service improvement initiatives across urgent care services.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the day-to-day operational management of the Male Acute Mental Health Ward
Provide strong clinical leadership and professional supervision to nursing and multidisciplinary staff
Coordinate safe, effective, and recovery-focused care for patients with complex mental health needs
Support staff performance, wellbeing, and professional development
Participate in the Duty Nurse Coordinator rota, including occasional weekend duties
Promote positive teamwork and collaborative relationships with internal departments and external agencies
Ensure compliance with safeguarding standards, governance frameworks, and NHS quality requirements
Contribute to quality improvement projects, audits, and service development initiatives

Candidate Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • Current professional registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (RMN, RNMH, or RNLD)
    Master’s level qualification in a relevant field, or equivalent senior clinical experience at Band 6 or above
    Practice Assessor or Practice Supervisor qualification
    Training in clinical supervision and staff support

Essential Experience

  • Proven experience managing teams within inpatient mental health services
    Strong understanding of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding procedures
    Experience supporting patients with complex mental health conditions and risk behaviours
    Knowledge of governance, medicines management, and quality improvement methodologies
    Ability to work collaboratively with families, carers, partner organisations, and multidisciplinary teams
