About the Role
The University is undertaking a significant transformation of its digital and data environment as part of the Sussex 2035 strategy. The newly appointed Data Architect will play a critical role in defining how data is managed, structured, governed, and utilised across academic and operational functions.
Working within the IT Services division, you will provide leadership in enterprise data architecture, supporting the development of modern frameworks, scalable data models, and governance standards that improve institutional decision-making and operational performance.
The role will also contribute to the University’s ambitions around innovation, automation, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence technologies.
What You’ll Be Doing
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and developing the University’s enterprise-wide data architecture
Establishing data standards, governance frameworks, and architectural principles
Supporting strategic initiatives linked to digital transformation and operational improvement
Improving data quality, accessibility, and consistency across systems
Advising on data lifecycle management, stewardship, and ownership models
Collaborating with stakeholders across academic departments and professional services
Supporting the responsible implementation of AI, analytics, and automation technologies
Providing architectural guidance on major digital and infrastructure projects
This role will influence how the University manages and uses data for years to come.
About You
The successful candidate will have substantial experience working in Data Architecture or a related senior information architecture role within a complex organisation.
You should be able to demonstrate:
- Strong knowledge of enterprise data modelling and governance
Experience designing scalable and sustainable data architectures
Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
The ability to translate technical concepts into practical business solutions
Confidence working across multiple strategic programmes simultaneously
Experience with recognised frameworks and methodologies such as:
- TOGAF
ArchiMate
Entity Relationship Modelling (ERM)
Decision Model and Notation (DMN)
would be highly advantageous.
