Role Overview

This is a senior clinical post within a specialist forensic mental health service, providing psychiatric leadership for a low secure female learning disability ward (Ivy / Clover / Kestrel). The role is focused on delivering high-quality, legally compliant, recovery-oriented care for detained patients with complex needs, alongside multidisciplinary collaboration and service leadership.

The postholder will act as the Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act, supporting long-term rehabilitation pathways (average length of stay approximately five years) within a structured inpatient setting.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Patient Care

  • Provide consultant-level psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning within a forensic learning disability setting
    Lead weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, formulation reviews, and structured risk management discussions
    Oversee CPA (Care Programme Approach) reviews, typically held every six months
    Manage referrals (approximately four per year) from internal and external services
    Ensure safe, evidence-based prescribing and clinical decision-making within a bio-psycho-social framework

Legal & Safeguarding Duties

  • Fulfil statutory responsibilities under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
    Prepare and present reports for tribunals, hospital manager hearings, MAPPA meetings, and Section 117 aftercare processes
    Ensure all care delivery aligns with legal and ethical frameworks governing detained patients

Team & Service Delivery

Work closely with ward managers, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, pharmacists, and junior doctors
Supervise and support junior medical staff, including training responsibilities where appropriate
Contribute to multidisciplinary planning and collaborative care delivery across secure services

The post sits within a large forensic inpatient service, alongside multiple consultant colleagues and a wider clinical workforce including specialty doctors and trainees. The service is structured to support long-term rehabilitation, risk reduction, and reintegration planning for complex patients.

Person Requirements

Essential Experience & Skills

  • GMC registration with licence to practise
    Inclusion (or eligibility within 6 months) on the Specialist Register in Psychiatry
    Approved Clinician and Section 12 approval under the Mental Health Act
    Strong clinical judgement in managing complexity, uncertainty, and risk
    Excellent communication skills in multidisciplinary and legal contexts
    Ability to lead MDT decision-making and influence service delivery
