Role Overview
This Consultant Psychiatrist post is based within the South Somerset Community Mental Health Team (CMHT), specifically covering the Yeovil West catchment area. The service supports a defined population of approximately 45,000 people across several GP practices.
The role sits within a wider consultant group covering South Somerset (Yeovil East, Yeovil West, and Chard), working in partnership with an established Associate Specialist and a multidisciplinary team (MDT). Care delivery follows a functional, community-focused model with close links to inpatient services where required.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Assessment
- Provide consultant-level psychiatric assessment and treatment for patients referred via GP and specialist pathways
Manage complex cases including severe mental illness (SMI), ADHD with comorbidity, and patients with complex medication needs
Conduct individual and joint assessments with MDT colleagues as required
Oversee clinical decision-making through structured referral and triage systems
Service Delivery & Leadership
- Contribute to structured referral management meetings and clinical governance processes
Support caseload management systems ensuring safe, balanced clinical workloads
Provide medical input to Assertive Outreach and specialist community services
Participate in multidisciplinary care planning and risk management discussions
On-Call & Senior Clinical Cover
- Participate in a 1:11 on-call rota (weekday evenings and weekends)
Provide Responsible Clinician cover for inpatient services when required
Support Mental Health Act assessments and Section 136 responsibilities where appropriate
Service Structure
The CMHT operates within an integrated community mental health system that includes:
- Assertive Outreach Team (AOT): Intensive support for complex, high-risk patients
Connect 18 Service: Transition support for young adults moving from CAMHS to adult services
Open Mental Health (OMH): Partnership-based service integrating NHS, primary care, and voluntary sector support
Specialist Psychological Services: CBT, DBT, EMDR, CAT, family therapy, and trauma-informed interventions
Physical Health & Wellbeing Clinics: Clozapine, depot, and health monitoring services
This integrated model supports holistic, stepped-care delivery across the region.
Candidate Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
GMC Specialist Registration (or eligibility within 6 months of CCT)
Approved Clinician status and Section 12 approval
Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych)
Accreditation for training junior doctors
Essential Experience
- Minimum 3 years supervised higher specialist training (ST4–ST6 equivalent)
Experience working at consultant level in psychiatry
Strong background in community adult mental health services
Experience in ADHD assessment and management

- Ability to work independently in complex clinical environments
Strong analytical and decision-making capability
Leadership and service development experience
Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
