Role Overview
University College London (UCL) is seeking an experienced Senior Laboratory Manager to oversee the operational leadership of teaching and research laboratories at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute.
Based primarily at the Royal Free Hospital, with occasional work at UCL Bloomsbury campuses, this role is central to ensuring high standards of laboratory safety, efficiency, and scientific excellence across dental and biomaterials research environments.
You will lead laboratory operations, supervise technical staff, and support both research and teaching activities in one of Europe’s leading postgraduate dental schools.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Manage day-to-day operations of teaching and research laboratories
Supervise and support a team of laboratory technicians
Ensure compliance with all laboratory safety and regulatory standards
Act as Departmental Safety Officer and lead health & safety procedures
Oversee procurement, equipment maintenance, and laboratory budgeting
Coordinate laboratory resources across multiple sites (Royal Free Hospital & Bloomsbury)
Deliver training to staff and students on specialist laboratory techniques and equipment
Support sustainability initiatives within laboratory operations
Work closely with academic and estates teams to maintain high-quality research infrastructure
UK public sector laboratory standards
About You
You are an experienced laboratory professional with strong leadership capability and technical expertise in biomaterials and biomedical laboratory environments.
You will bring:
- Proven experience managing laboratory facilities in a research or academic setting
Strong background in biomaterials characterisation and analysis
Hands-on experience with techniques such as:
- Electron microscopy
Mechanical testing
Contact angle measurement
ATR-FTIR spectroscopy
Cell culture techniques
Experience maintaining and managing laboratory equipment
Strong leadership and team management skills
Deep understanding of laboratory health & safety regulations
Ability to support both research and teaching activities
