This position sits within Information Technology Services and focuses on designing and implementing a modern, enterprise-wide data architecture. You will help position data as a strategic asset—supporting everything from academic delivery and research to operational decision-making.

This is a high-impact role where your work will influence long-term digital transformation, including the ethical use of data, automation, and artificial intelligence.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Designing and maintaining the University’s enterprise data architecture
Developing future-state data models aligned with institutional goals
Establishing standards, principles, and governance frameworks for data
Defining best practices for data ownership, stewardship, and lifecycle management
Supporting major digital transformation and IT programmes with architectural input
Working collaboratively with academic and professional teams to improve data quality, access, and consistency
Enabling responsible use of advanced analytics, automation, and AI technologies

Strategic Context

This role supports the University’s long-term strategy, Sussex 2035: Creating Progressive Futures, which prioritises growth, resilience, and improved performance.

A major part of this strategy is the Digital and Data Futures programme, aimed at building a fully data-driven institution. As Data Architect, you will be instrumental in delivering this vision by strengthening data governance, infrastructure, and architecture.

About You

You’ll bring a combination of technical expertise and strategic thinking, with the ability to influence stakeholders across a complex organisation.

You should have:

  • Proven experience as a Data Architect or in a similar senior data-focused role
Strong knowledge of enterprise data architecture and modelling approaches
Experience developing data governance frameworks and standards
The ability to communicate complex technical ideas to non-technical audiences
Confidence working with diverse stakeholders across large organisations

Desirable:

Familiarity with frameworks and tools such as TOGAF, ArchiMate, ER modelling, or DMN

The role sits within a forward-looking IT Services division led by the Chief Digital Technology Officer. The University is currently undergoing a major digital transformation programme, including:

  • Upgrading digital infrastructure and networks
    Expanding campus facilities and accommodation
Enhancing enterprise systems and data capabilities

This creates a unique opportunity to contribute to a large-scale, long-term transformation.

Why Work at Sussex?
