Overview

This role is a permanent Consultant Psychiatrist post within Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, providing senior clinical leadership to the South Somerset Community Mental Health Team (CMHT), specifically covering the Yeovil West locality. The service operates across a defined GP catchment population and is structured to deliver high-quality, recovery-focused care for adults with complex and enduring mental health conditions.

The post is based at Magnolia House, Summerlands Hospital, Yeovil, working alongside a multidisciplinary team including psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, and specialist mental health practitioners.

Service Context

The South Somerset CMHT is part of a wider integrated community mental health system, working closely with:

  • Assertive Outreach and Dual Diagnosis services
    Early Psychosis Intervention (STEP) team
    Home Treatment Team
    Open Mental Health (OMH) partnership service with voluntary and community organisations
    Psychological therapy services (CBT, DBT, EMDR, CAT, and others)

The service model emphasises integrated care planning, shared decision-making, and collaborative multidisciplinary working to support individuals with severe mental illness, neurodevelopmental comorbidities, substance misuse, and complex psychosocial needs.

Key Responsibilities

The Consultant Psychiatrist will provide clinical leadership and psychiatric expertise across community services, including:

  • Senior psychiatric assessment and management of complex community caseloads
    Oversight of patients with severe mental illness, ADHD with comorbidities, and treatment-resistant conditions
    Participation in multidisciplinary team meetings and care planning reviews
    Leadership in risk management, safeguarding, and clinical governance processes
    Contribution to service development and transformation initiatives within community mental health services
    Liaison with primary care, inpatient units, and external agencies to ensure continuity of care
    Support for training, supervision, and professional development of junior doctors and multidisciplinary colleagues
    Optional participation in the senior on-call rota (1:11 basis)

Working Arrangements

  • Full-time, Monday to Friday (9:00–17:00)
    Community-based role with no inpatient ward responsibility
    Based at Magnolia House, Yeovil
    Structured systems for referral management and caseload allocation to maintain clinical balance and safety

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a qualified Consultant Psychiatrist registered on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligible within 6 months of CCT/CESR)
    Hold MRCPsych and Section 12 approval under the Mental Health Act
    Have significant experience in adult community psychiatry
    Demonstrate competence in managing complex psychiatric presentations including ADHD and comorbid conditions
    Show leadership ability in multidisciplinary and system-based care
    Have a strong understanding of clinical governance, risk management, and NHS service frameworks
    Be capable of independent clinical decision-making and service development contribution
