Overview
This is a permanent Band 5 role within the Piece of Mind Mental Health Support Team (MHST), based in Darlington and delivered by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. The post offers an opportunity to work directly with children and young people in educational settings, supporting early intervention for mild to moderate mental health difficulties.
The EMHP role sits within a wider national initiative to strengthen mental health provision in schools and colleges, focusing on early identification, evidence-based support, and prevention.
Service Context
The Mental Health Support Team works in partnership with:
- Local schools and colleges
Families and carers
Educational staff and safeguarding teams
Wider NHS mental health services
The service forms part of a regional approach across County Durham, Darlington, Teesside, North Yorkshire, York, and Selby, aiming to improve access to timely mental health care for young people.
Key Responsibilities
As an Educational Mental Health Practitioner, you will:
- Deliver evidence-based psychological interventions for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues
Provide structured 1:1 therapeutic support in education settings
Run or contribute to group-based parenting programmes
Support schools in developing whole-setting approaches to mental health and wellbeing
Carry out mental health assessments and structured risk evaluations
Develop care plans in collaboration with young people, families, and education staff
Support early identification and prevention of mental health difficulties in schools
Deliver training and awareness sessions for school staff
Ensure accurate documentation and communication of clinical risk and intervention plans
Working Environment
- Based at Darlington Memorial Hospital (Mulberry Centre, Rowan Building)
School-based outreach work across education settings
Full-time, permanent NHS Agenda for Change Band 5 role
Collaborative multi-agency working with education and health professionals
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have:
- A BSc (Hons) in a relevant field
Completion of a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Mental Health Practice (HEE commissioned)
Experience delivering therapeutic interventions with children and young people
Ability to conduct mental health assessments and risk evaluations
Experience working in or alongside educational settings
Strong communication, interpersonal, and report-writing skills
A recovery-focused, values-driven approach to mental health care
Commitment to ongoing professional development
Desirable experience includes delivering training or workshops for school staff.
