The Role

This is a senior operational position responsible for leading the day-to-day management of teaching and research laboratories. Based primarily at the Royal Free Hospital, with some activity in Bloomsbury, the role combines technical expertise with leadership and organisational responsibilities.

You will play a central role in ensuring that laboratory environments are safe, compliant, and fully equipped to support high-quality research and teaching.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily laboratory operations across multiple sites.
    Lead and manage a team of technical staff, supporting their development and performance.
    Coordinate laboratory equipment, maintenance schedules, and procurement processes.
    Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, acting as Departmental Safety Officer.
    Support research and teaching activities through effective lab management and technical guidance.
    Train staff and students in specialist laboratory techniques and equipment use.
    Contribute to sustainability initiatives and efficient resource management.
    Work collaboratively with academic, estates, and support teams.

About You

You will bring:

  • Extensive experience managing laboratories in a scientific or academic setting.
    Strong technical expertise in biomaterials characterisation techniques (e.g. electron microscopy, mechanical testing, ATR-FTIR, contact angle analysis).
    Experience in equipment operation, maintenance, and laboratory systems.
    Knowledge of cell culture techniques.
    Proven leadership and team management skills.
    A solid understanding of laboratory health and safety standards and compliance.
