About the Institution
The UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology is a globally recognised centre for neuroscience research and education. Established in 1950 and part of UCL since 1997, it plays a central role within the Faculty of Brain Sciences.
The Institute focuses on translating scientific discoveries into treatments for neurological disorders. It works closely with clinical partners and is supported by organisations such as Brain Research UK, which funds innovative research into neurological diseases.
The Miriam Marks Fund, established in memory of a patient who died from Alzheimer’s disease, supports research into neurodegeneration and underpins this fellowship programme.
Role Overview
This fellowship provides an opportunity for postdoctoral researchers (clinical or non-clinical) to develop an independent research programme focused on the molecular and biological mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver a high-quality, laboratory-based research programme.
Investigate molecular pathways and biological mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative conditions.
Collaborate with a Principal Investigator (sponsor) within the Institute.
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present to academic audiences.
Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration across UCL.
(For clinicians) Option to undertake clinical duties, subject to agreement and NHS honorary contract.
Funding and Duration
- Duration: 3 years (funded by the Miriam Marks Fund)
Additional support: £20,000 per year for research consumables
Fellows are encouraged to apply for external funding to extend their research beyond the fellowship period

Applicants must demonstrate:
- A PhD or medical qualification in a relevant discipline.
A strong, innovative research proposal addressing neurodegenerative disease mechanisms.
Proven ability to conduct high-quality, original research.
Experience with relevant laboratory or research methodologies.
Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
