Role Overview
The University of Reading is recruiting a Lecturer in Human Geography within the Department of Geography and Environmental Science. This role sits within a dynamic academic environment focused on addressing global social and environmental challenges through teaching, research, and public engagement.
The successful candidate will join the Human Geography Research Cluster (HGRC), contributing to its mission of advancing research that explores inequality, power structures, and pathways toward more just and sustainable futures. The role is closely aligned with the Global Development Research Division.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate how their research complements and extends existing departmental expertise, particularly in areas such as political, cultural, urban, feminist, environmental, participatory, and development geography.
Teaching Responsibilities
You will play a key role in delivering engaging and research-informed teaching across undergraduate geography programmes. This includes:
- Designing and delivering innovative lectures and seminars in Human Geography
Supporting field-based learning and applied geographical teaching
Supervising undergraduate dissertation projects
Contributing to curriculum development across Human Geography modules
You will also contribute to teaching across related programmes such as Geography, Human and Physical Geography, and Geography and Economics.
Research Expectations
This position places strong emphasis on developing an active and impactful research profile. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting independent and collaborative research in Human Geography
Producing high-quality academic publications in peer-reviewed outlets
Developing research proposals and applying for external funding
Contributing to interdisciplinary research within the department and beyond
Required Qualifications and Skills
Essential Requirements
- PhD in Human Geography or a closely related discipline
Strong track record or clear potential for high-quality academic publications
Ability to design and deliver innovative undergraduate teaching
Competence in teaching core Human Geography theories and qualitative research methods
Desirable Experience
- Experience preparing research grant applications
Potential to secure external research funding
Experience supervising student research projects
