Support early mental health care for children and young people
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Wellbeing in Mind Teams in York as an Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP). You will be part of a growing, innovative NHS service focused on early intervention, prevention, and improving mental health support within schools and colleges.
The role sits within a national programme designed to increase access to evidence-based mental health support for children and young people.
About the role
As an EMHP, you will work directly within education settings to support students, staff, and whole-school wellbeing approaches. Your work will combine direct clinical interventions with broader preventative and educational activities.
You will be part of a multidisciplinary team delivering low-intensity psychological support using evidence-based approaches, primarily Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
Key responsibilities
 Whole-school wellbeing support
- Help develop and implement whole-school mental health strategies
Contribute to wellbeing policies, resources, and campaigns
Deliver assemblies, workshops, and PSHE-related mental health education
 Staff consultation & support
- Provide advice and guidance to teachers and school staff
Support staff confidence in managing pupil wellbeing needs
Offer both formal and informal consultation sessions
 Direct therapeutic work with young people
- Conduct assessments for children and young people experiencing emotional distress
Deliver low-intensity CBT-based interventions
Support early identification and prevention of worsening mental health needs
Working pattern
- Full-time role
Based in schools and colleges across York
Requires independent travel across the locality (business use vehicle essential)
Who this role is for
We are looking for a qualified Education Mental Health Practitioner who is passionate about improving young people’s mental health through early intervention.
Essential requirements:
- Completion of a BPS or HEE-approved EMHP training programme
Registration with BPS and/or BABCP (or relevant professional body)
Experience working in education settings
Experience delivering low-intensity CBT interventions
Ability to manage a caseload independently
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Skills and competencies
You should be able to demonstrate:
- Understanding of emotional distress in children and adolescents
Ability to deliver evidence-based psychological interventions
Competence in risk assessment and safeguarding
Strong written communication (reports, letters, case notes)
Ability to build effective therapeutic relationships
Good organisational and time management skills
Confidence using digital systems and IT tools
About the Wellbeing in Mind Teams
The service is part of the national Mental Health Support Teams (MHST) programme, delivered in schools across North Yorkshire and York.
The team focuses on three core functions:
Whole-school mental health and wellbeing development
Consultation and advice for education staff
Direct low-intensity therapeutic interventions for young people
Each function contributes equally to the team’s work, ensuring a balanced and preventative approach to mental health support.
