As stroke services across the region continue to evolve, including the launch of a new Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU), you will be at the forefront of delivering modern, high-quality care.
You will become part of a collaborative team of consultants and specialist doctors, all committed to improving outcomes for stroke patients across Somerset.
Your Role in the Team
As a Consultant Stroke Physician, you will play a central role in delivering comprehensive stroke care across the patient pathway—from emergency intervention to rehabilitation.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading daily ward rounds within the Hyperacute Stroke Unit
Supporting a 24/7 thrombolysis service, including telemedicine collaboration
Running rapid access TIA clinics throughout the week
Managing patients across acute stroke units in multiple sites
Contributing to stroke rehabilitation and early discharge planning
Supervising and teaching junior doctors and medical students
Participating in the on-call rota (approximately 1 in 8 weekends)
Supporting and leading research and clinical trials within the department

Essential Requirements
Qualifications
- MRCP (or equivalent)
Full registration with the
General Medical Council
Entry on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT completion)
Experience & Skills
Strong clinical experience in:
- Acute stroke care
Thrombolysis
TIA management
Stroke rehabilitation
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care
Desirable Profile
- Higher research qualification (e.g. MD or PhD)
Experience in teaching, leadership, or service development
Active involvement in research or quality improvement projects
