Overview of the Role
This is a senior clinical opportunity for a Consultant Medical Oncologist to join a forward-thinking oncology service within Somerset. The post is ideal for a clinician with a strong interest in melanoma and gynaecological cancers who is keen to contribute to both patient care and service development.
You will be part of a well-established oncology network delivering comprehensive cancer care, including systemic anti-cancer therapies, radiotherapy, and inpatient and outpatient services. The role offers a balance of clinical work, research involvement, and teaching, within a collaborative and supportive multidisciplinary environment.
Your Role in the Team
Clinical Responsibilities
- Lead the care of patients with melanoma and gynaecological cancers.
Deliver outpatient and inpatient oncology services.
Prescribe and oversee systemic anti-cancer treatments.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
Work closely with specialists across dermatology, gynaecology, radiology, and palliative care.
Engage with immunotherapy and clinical nurse specialist teams to optimise patient outcomes.
Service Development & Leadership
- Contribute to ongoing improvements in oncology services.
Support the development of radiotherapy and immunotherapy pathways.
Participate in clinical governance and quality assurance activities.
Education & Research
- Teach and supervise junior doctors and trainees.
Take part in clinical research and trials within an active research portfolio.
Contribute to innovation and evidence-based practice.
On-Call Commitment
Participate in a shared on-call rota (approximately 1 in 12), including evenings and weekends.
Working Environment
You will work across key sites including Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil Hospital, supported by modern facilities and ongoing investment in cancer services. The Trust serves a population of over 500,000 and is recognised for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
The team includes consultants, specialist doctors, advanced practitioners, pharmacists, and dedicated cancer nurse specialists, all working together to deliver integrated care.
Essential Requirements
Qualifications
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with licence to practise
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of achieving CCT)
CCT in Medical Oncology (or equivalent)
Experience
- Strong clinical experience in melanoma and/or gynaecological oncology
Experience delivering systemic anti-cancer therapies
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within MDTs

Desirable Criteria
- Involvement in clinical trials or research
Experience with electronic prescribing systems
Teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level
